Newport Girls Select Basketball provides a competitive basketball program to 4th - 8th grade players in the catchment area for Newport High School that builds players skills and confidence and prepares athletes to play middle school and high school basketball. Newport Select is part of the Eastside Travel League (ETL). All programs in the ETL are "feeder" teams, meaning the teams are formed by players from within their high school catchment area. - Our catchment area includes students residing within the Newport High School boundary, regardless of where they attend school. Waivered spots are sometimes available if there has not been enough interest for a team from within our boundary area.
Basketball is a team sport. We expect all players to demonstrate good sportsmanship and for everyone to contribute positively to the team experience.
Most teams will hold 10-12 players on the roster. We strive to select players for a balanced, even roster. Every player will get playtime. We require a steady practice commitment to be able to develop individually and as a team. Team members are expected to participate in practices, games, and tournaments. Factors that go into how much will be based on on practice attendance, attitude, game readiness.
The Newport Girls Select Basketball program has a strong grounding in the fundamentals of basketball as well as advanced game play strategies.
The mission of the Newport Girls Select Basketball program is to provide a constructive and rewarding experience for future student-athletes of Newport High School through focusing on individual and team development.
Our coaches strive to develop each player through teaching the fundamentals and skills of the game, while also providing a team first system for players to develop within.
The Eastside Travel League exists to promote great sportsmanship and healthy youth basketball competition, while providing the opportunity for community based feeder programs to compete against one another.
